The wedding ring, uncovered among the ashes that the doctor stirs at the end of the poem, symbolizes an unhappy marriage. Plath was known for her abusive marriage to the British poet Ted Hughes. The marriage ended in separation in 1962, after Plath discovered that Hughes, who reportedly beat her, was having an affair.
