Why did Monsieur de Merret leave his wife and abandon his estate in the novel, La Grande Breteche?

Merret left his estate after discovering his wife's adultery with the young Spaniard. In response to this betrayal, Merret cruelly condemned the man to a slow and agonizing death while forcing his wife to listen or confess.
