Chapter Twenty foreshadows Josefa's later willingness to break her vows to coach Amara and to lie to Severo about knowing about God, when she was living with the wolves. The beach literally and figuratively separates Josefa from the convent, which represents her connection to God. On the beach, Josefa feels free to pursue the carnal enjoyment of swimming naked, even though she's aware that God can see her. The trip to the beach makes Josefa realize that she's found a fulfilling life taking care of Amara without God's involvement. Josefa's unique situation has allowed her to live amongst nuns while remaining disconnected from God.
