The pink-tinged tortillas that Claudia and her family eat in the chapter titled “Mayuelas’s Mill” is a symbol of the dramatic lengths to which people will go in order to feed themselves. Though Claudia does not say this to her family, she implies to the reader that the pink hue is due to someone’s blood from the tortilla press bleeding into the masa.
