Why does Mr. Riddle decide to retire Big Red in the novel, King of the Wind?

Mr. Riddle decides to retire Big Red because he wants people to remember the horse in his prime. Mr. Riddle believes that Big Red can prove his pedigree through his descendants, just like his ancestors did.
