In Chapter 17, what was Hitler's bunker like?

The bunker was like a cave. The cement corridors were narrow, painted the color of rust, and the ceilings were low. The rooms were painted gray, and moisture seeped through the rock walls. An artesian well provided the water supply, and a 60-kilowatt diesel generator provided energy for the switchboard, lights, and heating. Air came from above through a filer. The bunker was almost like a prison with its three separate security checkpoints. There was the unpleasant smell of boots, uniforms, and coal-tar disinfectants. One German solider described it "as pleasant as working in a public urinal" (211).
