Even though it was pouring rain, thousands lined the streets from the railroad station to the cemetery to honor Patton. Hundreds of people walked from the capital to attend the burial ceremonies. Representatives from nine countries and high ranking officers of American troops stationed in Europe followed the coffin. A gun carriage carried the coffin from the railroad station to the cemetery as a French battery fired a 17-round volley salute. During the burial a military band played the Third Army March. A brief religious service was held, and the coffin was lowered into the grave.
