The affair between Summersby and Eisenhower was doomed. General George Marshall had threatened to expose Eisenhower if he requested a divorce. It was believed that Eisenhower had a great political future after the war, but American did not look kindly on candidates who were divorced. So Marshall ordered that the affair end.
