At the beginning of Chapter 3, why was Eisenhower troubled?

Eisenhower was supreme commander of the Allied forces in Europe. He had dealt with one problem after another. However by October of 1944, his boss General Marshall had set a deadline that the war was to be over by New Year's Eve. Eisenhower knew that the proposed deadline was impossible and that worried him.
