What event prompted Booth to become more active in the Civil War?

Booth was stricken with an illness that prevented him from pursuing his acting career with his usual fervor. During this time, he became more involved with his interest in the Civil War, and the progress being made by the Confederates. Booth became completely obsessed with doing anything he could to ensure that the South would win, or in case of failure, rise again.
