When Sitko attempted to paint in a way other than what was expected of a Native American, the rumors of his non-Indian background began. Then "fanatics," claiming the paintings glorified "perversion," threatened to burn the gallery where the art was on display. As Sitko tried to defend his name, his fame vanished.
