The cigarettes that Mad and Vic find in the bricks of the chimney on Vic's grandparents' old house are symbolic of his parents' smoldering first kiss as well as the building chemistry between Mad and Vic. The "smoking bricks" of Vic's parents "first kiss" turns out to contain old cigarettes. This speaks to the powerful kiss and heated kiss that Vic's parents once shared on top of the roof. At the same time, the "smoking bricks" are also symbolic of Mad and Vic's building closeness and of the physical attraction they feel towards one another. While they do not share their first kiss up on the roof, they do hold each other's wrists and are honest with one another in a way that they weren't before. The "smoking bricks" clue also has double meaning, in that bricks give out smoke, but so do cigarettes. In this way, the cigarettes in the the chimney also speak to the multiplicity of meanings present in the world, something that Mad and Vic both appreciate in life.
