How does Kafka negotiate a cheaper rate at the hotel where he is staying in the memoir, Kafka on the Shore?

Kafka first finds the discounted hotel through the YMCA and then proceeds to tell the clerk at the hotel that he is a student doing research at the library. The clerk calls the library, and Kafka's friend, Oshima, confirms the story.
