Deer symbolize innocent ignorance and life without learning. When Andras is walking around Lake Mohican, he thinks about how he is unable to convey his experiences in escaping Europe with the rise of Nazism. He sees three deer and comes to envy them, free from knowledge, and free to simply live. The deer quickly flee from sight, meaning they are not truly free, and meaning that the ability to live without knowledge is impossible.
