What is July’s feeling about Maureen working in the fields in the novel, July’s People?

July doesn’t like Maureen working in the fields. He at first claims it is because the work is beneath her, that this work is the work of his people, not the whites. Maureen is unclear as to whether he resents her working the land or just working with his people. She finally figures out he is afraid she will talk of his affair in town.
