Alaska is the overall setting of the novel. It is in the extreme north and the weather is often brutal. In the previous novel of the series, Julie walked for miles over the tundra to reach the home of her father in Kangik. There are several specific settings described in the novel, and there are several others mentioned that do not actually appear to the reader. For example, Julie's father, Kapugen, travels from Kangik to Fairbanks by plane to get supplies.
