Why does Mr. Phillotson decide to leave Marygreen in the novel, Jude the Obscure?

Mr. Phillotson decides to leave Marygreen, even though he is the schoolmaster there, because he would like to pursue his education. Consequently, he needs to leave and go to Christminster where there are several universities.
