Hesse's use of imagery is limited. He does not spend much time describing the actual settings of the story, giving only a few details. Instead, he describes the journey in broad terms of the people involved and their reasons for undertaking it. Hesse also writes in long paragraphs that sometimes condense many events into a short space and sometimes spend many sentences expanding upon a small point.
