How does the author use foreshadowing in Journey to Topaz?

In Chapter Thirteen, Yuki leaves the Kurihara family without speaking to Mr. Kurihara or looking at the latest additions to his collection. Her omission is noted in the narrative as being unfortunate, since it is Yuki's last chance to speak with Mr. Kurihara. The reference heavily foreshadows Mr. Kurihara's death in the following chapter.
