The book's main conflict revolves around the Soviet Communist Party, and Stalin's "purge". Eugenia Semyonovna Ginzburg, the book's main subject and author, is accused of terrorism, imprisoned, and later released. Sadly, despite her experiences in the Soviet system, she does not turn against Communism but rather exults the fact that Lenin's principles are again being espoused by the government, as they were not during Stalin's reign. She fails to realize the very system which led to her suffering is, ultimately, unchanged.
