Finding ways to prevail against the odds through the concept of consolation is a motif in Ginzburg's "Journey into the Whirlwind". Most of the women who are imprisoned are mothers and grandmothers, and must cope with the understanding that, not only are they enduring limitless suffering, but their families -especially their children -are without them. That hurts them the most.
