How does Joe realize he has no left arm, and how does he feel about it in the novel, Johnny Got His Gun?

Joe realizes he has not left arm because he cannot actually feel the arm. His reaction is one of shock... he freezes and goes rigid. Joe is angry because they took his arm without his permission.
