Whitey Whiteside from Jim the Boy is a traveling salesman that is romantically interested in Jim's mother. While he seems to really like Jim, there is always the suspicion that he's being nice to get Cissy to notice him. Later in the novel, he loses his job and moves on never to be heard from again.
