How is Quint described in the novel, Jaws?

Quint is a shark hunter. He is described as having been isolated all of his life, and he hunts the shark purely for profit without thought for the community. As experienced as Quint is, he still underestimates the threat the white monster poses, and in the end, his boat is wrecked and he loses his life.
