Two types of women are portrayed in the characters of Jane and Blanche. Blanche is worldly, sophisticated and beautiful. Jane is quite the opposite. And yet, it is Jane, not Blanche, that Rochester prefers, which is counter to the usual stereotypical romance of the time.
