It has been said that Jane Eyre is both a realist and a Gothic novel. Is this true?

It is actually, true. Jane Eyre is a 'realist' novel because the heroine's life is depicted in grim reality. She has a horrible childhood and is not treated well. However, it can equally be said that it is a Gothic novel as well because of the supernatural elements, the dark overtones, the madness, and the potential for violence.
