Being a girl puts Willy in some precarious positions. She isn't able to move around as freely, and occasionally dresses as a boy to keep herself safe. Over the course of the novel, we also see that being a girl gets her out of trouble. One example would be when she's gone to the fort with Jordan, which is attacked by the British shortly after. The British release Willy because she's a girl.... the boys aren't afforded the same consideration.
