One major theme in Ivanhoe is that of chivalry. The code of chivalry, so well known by the knights, is often ignored, and many of the knights in Ivanhoe can be seen as dishonorable. The very things these knights were meant to protect people from.... theft, women's honor, and loyalty.... are the very traits they exhibit.
