The book is the second in a series. Though it can be read as a stand-alone, the reader who hasn't read the first in the series will not understand the full story of how Belly and Conrad came to be together in the first place. This background is not vital to understanding the story. The story is written in a straight-forward manner and the action moves quickly through a combination of dialogue and narrative. The dialogue is acceptable and believable to the time, characters, and situation. There is not a great deal of slang and it seems the characters are educated young people who have been taught to speak properly. However, they are not overly proper and their dialogue seems believable. A reader with an average vocabulary will find few unfamiliar words.
