Unconditional love is a recurring idea in the book. It may seem strange to have a theme of unconditional love in a book written by a man who made his mark in sports. But there are so many examples of unconditional love throughout the book it is an undeniable theme.

Lance's mother shows so much unconditional love for her son, especially in his early years when they have next to nothing, and what they do have she is working day and night to achieve. No matter how long she has worked or how tired she is, she is ready to offer love and support to Lance and whatever she can do to support his racing.
