Finding value in everyone is a recurring idea in the story. When the book begins, Craig's friends are his high school peers, primarily Aaron, Nia, and others. As his depression deepens, he knows he is different from them and he envies their ability to succeed at simple things like doing school work and even eating normally while even the most mundane things are increasingly paralyzing for him.
