Pamuk's family and his relationship with them is central to this memoir. He describes his father as fun-loving, outgoing and rather vain. His mother was strict but loving. Pamuk's parents' marriage was plagued by his father's infidelities, and his parents were often separated during his childhood. Sometimes, they even disappeared together for long periods of time, leaving Pamuk and his brother with other relatives.
