Island of the Blue Dolphins is another lesson in history and cultural heritage..... survival and hope. Through Karana's story, we learn what it takes to survive, and we also learn that experience can teach even young girls to utilize their knowledge, and in turn, guarantee their own survival. This novel also exposes the way in which people's lives were changed by outsiders..... their greed, and their desire for what they want at the expense of everyone around them. In my opinion, we can all learn from Karana, an uneducated young woman, whose own education in what it takes to live life each day can teach us. How many of us could survive her experiences?
