Constructing an acceptable hunting bow is an important step for a Yahi youth along the path to becoming a man. Ishi completes the construction of his bow according to tradition, fasting before each step. When he takes the bow on the first hunt of the spring, it proves to be well made. Now, Ishi is expected to hunt with the men and defend the village, important tasks for the men.
