After they are separated from Elder Uncle and Tushi, Ishi and Mother support one another in both practical and emotional ways. Ishi hunts, fishes, and gathers to provide food for Mother. He also builds the fire and brings feathers and animal hides for Mother's cape. Even though he fears that Elder Uncle and Tushi have died, he goes out to look for them for many days and tries to hide his fears and disappointment from Mother. Mother, on the other hand, continues to cook for Ishi and keeps the fire going. When they both agree that Elder Uncle and Tushi will not return, she cries with Ishi and helps him to grieve.
