The English court serves as the backdrop for the poem in which the speaker assures his guest they will not be overheard by spies. Jonson was highly critical of the privy council's use of spies during Elizabeth's reign. In "Inviting a Friend to Supper," he remains critical of that decision and cautions against authority figures overstepping their bounds by indulging in too much power and control.
