Homosexuality is a recurring idea in the novel because it is a part of the main story line and several of the subplots. Shane McFarland, Shannon's brother, is gay. As a teenager, Shane contracts a sexually-transmitted disease, allowing his parents to find out that he is gay. Shane's parents throw him out of the house, outraged at this immoral behavior.
