Into the Wild

Does the implication that Chris and Everett were comparing themselves to fictional characters in books throw a negative light on their quests to follow their dreams? That their dreams and desires were based on fiction? Why or why not? Explain.

I think Chris had an obsession problem. He found certain ideas so compelling that he tried to live them out in his reality. Thoreau did live in a cabin by a pond, but he had help; he had relationships; and he wasn't everything he claimed to believe in. Chris was a romantic explorer but his obsession with certain authors were not based on his reality. Chris sacrificed his family and himself, in part, for fiction.
