The postcard that Nayeli’s father sent her from Kankakee, Illinois is symbolic of Nayeli’s hope that her family will one day be reunited. When she discovers that her father has started a new family in America, she leaves the postcard tucked into his windshield without speaking to him. This shows her father that she has been there and also symbolizes the loss of the hope the postcard once represented.
