Generic Asian Man, Willis Wu's primary assigned identity, symbolizes invisibility. Stuck in a prescribed version of self, as Generic Asian Man, Willis feels completely unseen. Indeed, while satisfying this role, he does not even have lines in the script. Though this is one of the main parts he plays in the cop show, Willis also adopts the demeanor and behaviors of Generic Asian Man off set. The author uses the role to symbolize the ways in which all Asian men feel marginalized and thus unseen by American culture.
