There is a profusion of sensory imagery in the novel, with Martin describing settings and people in abundant detail. These highly stylized passages are balanced by scenes of dialogue that could be used for the stage or screenplays. On occasion, this dialogue contains expletives. For example, In the story, “Oktober,” the businessman whom Martin sees in the bar keeps saying the word “fucking.” The businessman also speaks in vernacular, unlike the rest of the characters in Martin’s milieu. Some of the vernacular words he uses are, “bloke,” “bloody hell” and “cheers.”
