John Allen Paulos is a mathematician, best selling author, columnist, showman, and full professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Paulos is best known for his undying devotion to mathematics, addressing mathematical illiteracy, and using humor as a basis for mathematics.

The author's perspective on this work is that of a dyed in the wool mathematician, scientist, educator, and frustrated observer. It is Paulos' wish to uncover the misconceptions and fears surrounding mathematics so that the majority of the public would be able to apply its principals soundly and accurately.
