Lyle tells some of the students never to underestimate objects, which is an allusion to another of the plots in the novel, the cartridge they call the Entertainment. It is unclear if he knows about the cartridge at this point, but he knows that there are somethings that cannot be underestimated or their power will overcome you. He could also be talking about the drugs that he might know the students are using. The drugs, as seen at the Ennet House, can have a profound effect on the way some people live.
