One of the major crises the characters have in the novel, Infinite Jest, is one of self. All of the characters are isolated and jaded in some way. They have great difficulty communicating with others and interacting in their daily lives. The most obvious cases are the patients of the Ennet House Drug and Alcohol Recovery House. These are people who use drugs to escape from their feelings of loneliness.
