Throughout Inconspicuous Consumption, the author employs a highly accessible and personable tone in order to earn her reader's trust and engagement. While Schlossberg has worked for the New York Times and has a career in investigative journalism, her tone is often casual, even light and joking. In each section she refers often to her own life and experiences, even poking fun of her personal habits or misconceptions. In this way, she humanizes herself, demystifies her role as a reporter and writer, and aligns herself with her reader's experience and perspective.
