Jolie is a simple, pretty peasant girl who, at fourteen, marries Parry. She becomes his wife and lives with him happily until she is killed by French troops. Jolie's spirit then continues to work with Parry to root out and destroy evil. After thwarting a Mongolian invasion, Jolie possesses the body of a peasant girl, making love to Parry, then causing his downfall. At the end of the novel, Jolie's spirit returns to possess willing bodies to make love to Parry.
