The need for love is a theme in the book. As a child, John Wade feels unloved by his father. He blames his father but it also seems that John is somewhat responsible because he ignores his father's offers to spend time together at a ball game. John spends a great deal of time working on his magic tricks and begins performing at school assemblies and birthday parties.
