After Harvey Oberst turns out to be innocent of the murder, Gillespie realizes that he knows nothing about how to solve this murder. He realizes that using Tibbs is his best chance to crack the case. If Tibbs solves it, Gillespie can take all the credit. If the case isn't solved, he can blame Tibbs.
