Prince Jonathan of Tortall is a knight who is four years older than Alanna. He shares Alanna's secret and has chosen her to be his squire so that he can watch over her and help her to keep her secret. Jonathan is a brave warrior and a good friend to Alanna. He is in love with Alanna and the two eventually become lovers. Jonathan also has the Gift of magic and encourages Alanna to achieve her dream of becoming a warrior.
