Gary, Raoul and Alex are Jonathan's fellow knights and friends. They are also friends of "Alan." Alanna and Alex have a friendly rivalry since he is Duke Roger's knight. Gary is also Jonathan's cousin. None of the friends know that Alan is really Alanna until the end of the book.
